I’ve been getting a little frustrated with the quality of my pictures. There’s always something wrong. The house doesn’t get enough light, my camera doesn’t allow for a higher ISO (its’ limit is 1600), my pictures always look so grainy. Plus it doesn’t help that my baby is CONSTANTLY moving, she just won’t hold still 🙂 Which isn’t a bad thing unless I’m trying to take pictures of her.
So, with that being said, I mentioned yesterday that I’m going to start taking pictures of stationary items, to try and nail the focus. Here’s my attempt…although I wish the focus was more on the eyes and not the nose of the stuffed animal.
And of course I had to take a picture of my baby
Yesterday, I had a suggestion to take one of the pictures as Black and White. So here’s the result.
I think lately, I’m definitely falling into a black and white accidental split lighting/matt rut. I like the picture for today, but I really need to switch it up. I need to work on my focus, I feel like my pictures are not as sharp as I’d like. It can be tough with a wiggle worm like my baby. So maybe tomorrow, I’ll challenge myself to take one of Ariya’s toys and really nail the focus on it. Wish me luck!
I took a ton of pictures today. No real theme here, I just wanted to play with lightroom.

Here I tried a little split lighting and split toning. The split toning doesn’t work at all, but she does look cute sucking her thumb laying down.
Something weird here is going on, with how bright her outfit is. But I love the background. Just need to figure out how to fix her outfit.
Lately, Ariya has been obsessed with glass doors. Here she is looking at the dogs waiting outside.
And then licking the glass door.
And when I tell her to stop, she gives me the “what did I do?” look.
And of course, I had to take a picture of Charlie. I saw a stray dog on the side of the road today and took him to the SPCA. He looked like he had recent surgery and I was worried at how cold it was out there today. The dog proceeded to crap all over my car because he was so scared, poor guy. I hope his owners claim him. But that got me all emotional and made me want to hug my pets and keep them close to me. I would be heartbroken if any of my pets were out there alone in the cold.
I received a critique to get rid of the muddy tones of a picture from a few days ago. Here’s the before and after:
And here’s my picture for today. Someone has discovered the baby gate.
So, from one of yesterday’s photos, someone suggested increasing the exposure on the picture. I’ve never really tried to understand the histogram, and would just eyeball increasing the exposure in Lightroom until it looked visually appealing to me. But I tried to make sense of the histogram for this picture and increase the exposure until it somewhat evened out.
However for this next photo, I didn’t want to look at the histogram at all. I’ve attempted split lighting before, but wasnt very successful. This time, I looked at the pictures that I took today, and what did I get from Ariya today but split lighting. Awesome. Totally by accident. I just adjusted the levels a bit and added a matte effect and here is the result.
So, from the last post, I received a suggestion to try a closer crop of Ariya watching Charlie eat dinner from his treat ball. And it was a great idea, something I hadn’t thought of. Here’s the edited version, and I think I really like it.
Here are some more photos from hanging out with my parents
Here are a few random pictures, no theme for these days. Just playing around with editing

For day 107, we went to a nearby winery. I’m so proud of my baby girl, she’s really a good kid. As long as she’s not sleepy, she’s pretty much a happy go lucky girl. Here she is on my husband’s lap, while we’re enjoying wine and cheese for a belated Valentine’s Day celebration.
For day 108, I feel like something clicked for me to get more in focus. Before, I had shot at f1.8 aperture, which means the window is smaller to get in focus. But I think these pictures were shot at f2.0. So I’ve been experimenting with it.
Someone within my project 365 group suggested I try to crop Ariya’s eyes in the upper left thirds. I’m not one to follow much rules, but I gave it a try. The Rule of thirds is a rule that some photographers use that allows the viewers eyes to draw into the picture, it’s supposed to be naturally pleasing to the eye. It’s a shame that I couldn’t compose it originally, but here goes my attempt.
Someone else suggested a black and white conversion and straighten out the bannister so here goes.
Today is a mishmash of pictures, no particular theme in mind. We’re still snowed in, after getting 20 inches of snow. My husband started shoveling the driveway yesterday, but our neighbor was kind enough to help and used their plow. Except that it was REALLY windy last night, so the driveway was covered AGAIN. Poor guy had to shovel the driveway again. Time to invest in a snowblower.
Anyway, here are my pics of the day.

As you can tell, I’m playing around with different editing techniques. Not exactly sure what my style is yet, but I like everything that I’m creating so far!
So, I’ve downloaded a ton of presets for Lightroom within the past few days, because, well, why not. there are some amazing looking pictures out there, and I wanted to figure out how to edit my pictures to look amazing too. Next level amazing, anyway. So, after watching a new tutorial on how to create a Matte effect, I thought why not. So here goes.
